I spent the early part of my retouching career chasing smoothness so aggressively that I’d sand all the life right out of a face. What I actually wanted, and what clients actually respond to, is softness. That creamy, slightly luminous quality that reads as healthy skin rather than a wax figure.

A smooth, noiseless image after all these curve adjustments will look like it was made in software. A little grain makes it look like it came out of a camera. Start around 20-25 for amount and keep the size relatively fine.


Step 6: Save Everything as a Preset - But Leave Exposure Out

Check the boxes for tone curve, grain, clarity, and saturation. Do not include exposure, highlights, shadows, whites, or blacks as part of the preset. If you bake a particular exposure into the preset, you’ll apply it to a photo that needs completely different exposure treatment and wonder why the preset isn’t working. What I’d Add From My Own Workflow

But in my beauty work, I often combine this preset foundation with a light pass of Clarity reduction on skin specifically, using a radial or brush mask rather than the global Clarity slider. The milky curve already reduces contrast, but pulling Clarity down on skin by about -15 to -25 using a targeted brush adds another layer of softness without touching the rest of the image. Eyes and hair stay sharp. Skin picks up that extra creaminess. It’s a subtle addition that takes the preset from “nice” to “that’s exactly the look I wanted.”

Also: this approach works best when your base exposure is already clean. If you’re fighting blown highlights or crushed shadows before applying the preset, the curve adjustments will fight your corrections and the result will feel muddy.
